STEP #1 – Choose a Builder
The first step in making a site is choosing a website builder.
A web builder provides the framework on which your website is built.
The top online building tools are simple to use and provide you with everything you need to create a great looking site with all of the features you will ever need.
Choosing the right one is an important part of the overall process.
Here are some of the factors you should consider:
- Ease of Use – Builders are designed to be intuitive and simple to use for even the most novice of users. The best ones make the process of creating a website as easy as dragging and dropping elements onto a live page. This means that what you see is what you get and there will be no surprises once your site is published.
- Extra Tools – Many platforms include extras, such as marketing tools and advertising credits, to help you get the word out about your new site. These tools can be extremely useful for a young site, but always consider whether you really need them or if they are simply a way for a company to entice you to use their service.
- Monthly Cost – Because there is so much competition, the monthly cost of hosting a website can be extremely low. Don’t hesitate seeking out the best deals or even requesting a discounted rate from a company. The worst thing that could happen is that they say no.
Most Popular Platforms
I have used more services than one would think is humanly possible. After trying them all, I can say that my favorite is Wix.
Wix is extremely easy to use, comes with a ton of extras and freebies to get you going, and costs as little as your morning cup of coffee.
Not only that, their website templates are the best in the biz and will make your website look amazing and professional.
I highly recommend their platform and for the purposes of this article, I will assume that you will use them, too.
STEP #2 – Set Up and Design Your Website
Upon signing up for Wix, you will be immediately thrust into the setup process.
You can choose between an AI application that automatically designs and builds your website or to simply go it alone.
No matter which you choose, the process will be extremely simple, but I like to use the more customized manual option.
The first step you will take is…
Selecting a Theme
Wix offers hundreds of professionally designed website themes for the low, low price of FREE.
All of the themes look great, but you should make sure your choice should convey your brand message appropriately.
If your brand is exciting and fresh, try to find a theme that conveys that with colors and style.
If you are representing a serious business, something more professional and minimal might be in order.
It is completely up to you to decide what the design of your website will be.
Keep in mind that your visitors will be interacting with and reading your website. You should, therefore, choose a theme that is user-friendly and not too hard on the eyes. You can never go wrong with a standard black-on-white text and a deviation from this norm may turn some users off.
No matter what theme you decide to use now, keep in mind that you can always change it in the future. In fact, even the largest websites undergo tweaks, changes, and a bit of polishing from time to time.
Edit Your Template
The template you select on Wix can be edited to suit your needs.
This can range from adding a contact box to a homepage to changing the colors of your theme. The possibilities are literally endless and the more you change and refine your website, the more unique it will be.
Wix also lets you use plugins to increase the functionality of your website. These added capabilities can do everything from add photo carousels, optimize the site for search engines, and even create an online store. The options are truly limitless and you will never run out of new things to try.
With Wix, the options are truly limitless and you will never run out of new things to try.
The lifeblood of any website is content.
For a website to succeed and become truly indispensable, you should create things that you and others possess a passion for. Today even businesses have their own blogs as a way of getting visitors who may not have found them otherwise.
Today even businesses have their own blogs as a way of getting visitors who may not have found them otherwise.
You can create your site before you have much content, but it is recommended that you begin with at least a few things of interest so that both users and search engines know that your site is worth visiting.
Ready-made content can also serve as a motivator and an indicator of how dedicated you will be to your new site.
Once it is up and running, it is vital to continue to add new content regularly. This will make your readers come back for more, ensure it remains fresh, and contribute to an overall marketing plan. There is no bigger turnoff that stale content.
STEP #3 – Choose a Domain Name
The final step you must take before launching your site on Wix is choosing a domain name.
What’s a domain name, you ask?
Your domain name is the address at which your website resides on the internet.
You may have entered a domain name to arrive at this site. Alternatively, you may have entered found us on Google, in which case, you entered the domain name ‘www.Google.com’.
Wix provides free domain names on their Wix.com subdomain.
We highly recommend against using this free option, as having your own domain not only lends legitimacy to your site but also prevents Wix from displaying ads on your beautiful new page!
You should try to choose a domain name that is short, easy to remember, can be spelled phonetically, and relates to the purpose of your website.
If you are creating a website for a business, you should obviously use your business name. If you don’t have a brand yet, you could use your name or, alternatively, think of a name that is relevant to your message. If you write about food, for example, you should include something about food in your domain name.
Aside from these general rules, you are free to select any name you want as long as it is available. Just remember that you will probably keep the same domain name for the life of your website, so make sure it is something that you like and which you can grow with.
And that’s it!
Wasn’t that easy?
Creating your own website is an exciting challenge that can provide extremely satisfying results.
You will quickly discover that work on your website is never truly done and that maintaining it is half the fun.
Keep exploring and learning as this is just the beginning!
